Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We want to make your home as safe as possible. That is why we have fitted carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in homes with a gas fire or gas boiler.

Following changes to carbon monoxide legislation which came into effect in October 2022, we were tasked with installing carbon monoxide detectors in our properties.

Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous and can be produced if your gas appliance is faulty. You cannot see it, taste it or smell it – but its effects can be very harmful.

CO detectors look and work much like your fire or smoke alarm by sounding an alarm when they detect carbon monoxide. The detector will detect carbon monoxide gas, to stop carbon monoxide poisoning.

Where is my carbon monoxide detector?

The detector will be in the room containing your gas boiler. If you have a gas fire, there will also be a carbon monoxide detector in that room. The law does not require a carbon monoxide detector to be installed in rooms where a gas cooker is the only appliance.

What type of carbon monoxide detector have you installed?

We have installed a battery powered detector which has a sealed battery. The battery lasts for 10 years, after which the detector will need to be replaced.

Do I need to test my carbon monoxide detector?

We recommend that you test all carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms in your home at least once a month. In addition, we will test all alarms in your home when we complete your gas service.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide detector or smoke alarm is faulty?

Please contact us on 0800 953 0213 (option 1) and we will arrange to replace your detector.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide detector goes off?

Firstly, it is important to recognise the difference between a low battery warning and the detector sounding. The low battery warning will be a single beep every minute or so. If the detector beeps continuously (as it does when you test it):

  • Turn all gas appliances off
  • Leave your home opening any windows as you go
  • Call Cadent on 0800 111 999
  • If anyone is unwell after the alarm goes off seek medical advice by dialling 111 or 999 if serious.
If you have any further questions please get in touch with us on 0800 953 0213 (option 1).
