Gas Safety Week 2024

Written by Community Gateway | Monday 09 September 2024

We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2024, taking place from 9th to 15th September. At Community Gateway, your safety is our top priority and this year’s theme is all about the importance of ‘Checking.’ Whether it’s scheduling your annual gas safety check or ensuring that your carbon monoxide alarm is working, every check is crucial in keeping you and your loved ones safe. Gas Safety Week is the perfect reminder of why these checks matter and how they contribute to you and your family’s safety.

What is Gas Safety Week?

Gas Safety Week is an annual campaign coordinated by the Gas Safe Register to raise awareness about the importance of gas safety in your homes. This year’s theme, “Every Check Counts,” emphasises the critical role that regular gas safety checks play in protecting you and your loved ones from potential dangers.

Why is Gas Safety so Important?

Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances can cause serious risks, including gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer — an odourless, colourless gas that can be lethal if undetected. Ensuring your appliances are regularly checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer is essential in preventing these risks.

Why Gas Safety Checks Matter

Gas safety checks are not just a legal requirement for us as your landlord—they are essential for keeping you safe in your home. During these FREE checks, we ensure that all gas appliances, fittings, and flues are functioning correctly and safely.

The Benefits of Annual Safety Checks

  • Prevents Gas Leaks - Regular safety checks can detect gas leaks that pose serious risks to your safety.
  • Avoids Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - It’s vital to have a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a fuel-burning appliance (excluding cookers). If you don’t have one, we’ll install alarms during our visit, or you can schedule an appointment, and we’ll fit one as soon as possible.
  • Ensures Efficient Operation of Gas Appliances - Properly maintained gas appliances operate more efficiently, helping you save energy and reduce bills. They are also less likely to break down.
  • Legal Compliance -By law, landlords must carry out annual gas safety checks and provide residents with a copy of the Gas Safety Record.

The Impact of No Access

Not being able to access a home for the annual gas safety check creates several issues:

  • Safety Concerns - The sooner we gain access, the sooner we can verify that your home is safe and address any potential safety hazards.
  • Increased Costs - Multiple visits to complete safety checks result in unnecessary costs, which could otherwise be spent on improving services for our tenants.
  • Wasted Resources - Time spent arranging and making repeat visits could be better used to carry out repairs and other essential services for tenants.

What to do if you smell gas?

Open as many windows and doors as you can to allow fresh air to flow through your home. Then call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is free to call.

If you have any concerns about your gas appliances, or if it’s time for your annual safety check, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to provide support and advice to keep you and your family safe.

Let’s all do our part this Gas Safety Week to keep our community safe. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility!
