Ribble Heights demolition underway

Community Gateway Association is taking a significant step towards improving the Grange area of Ribbleton, Preston, by demolishing five blocks of flats known as 'Ribble Heights.' The work began in early December 2024 and is expected to be completed by March 2025.

The flats, located on Fir Trees Avenue and Fir Trees Place, were purchased by Community Gateway in March 2024, with all 60 flats already vacant. Historically, the blocks had experienced low demand, high tenant turnover, and challenges with anti-social behaviour. An oversupply of flats on the estate, combined with the need for significant investment to bring them up to modern standards, made demolishing them the best option.

The demolition of these outdated buildings will transform the area, removing structures that no longer serve the community and creating new opportunities for the future.

Preston-based firm Bradley Demolition Ltd is handling the work to safely bring down the flats,

As part of our social value initiative, our Charitable subsidiary Preston Vocational Centre (PVC) and a local school attended the site. This visit allowed them to observe site setup arrangements, learn about health and safety practices, and witness demolition work firsthand.

Louise Mattinson, Director of Customers and Communities at Community Gateway Association, said:

“The flats failed to meet the standards we require to provide high-quality homes. We hope that residents in the area, many of them Community Gateway tenants, are relieved to see the tower blocks being removed, as they were a persistent source of problems.

Moving forward, we are exploring the potential that this piece of land offers to Community Gateway and the people of Ribbleton. While there are no firm plans to redevelop the land currently, we will keep the residents informed about any future plans for the site.

“This work will be completed soon, and we are pleased with the progress made so far. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during the demolition process.”
