Transforming Community Spaces: A Success Story in Ashton
In May 2024, our Engagement and Communities Officers carried out a community door knock in Ashton where they spoke to a tenant living in a ground floor flat next to a footpath, who told them he had no privacy as people using the footpath walk all over his front garden.
He told the officers about the fence that used to run along the footpath boundary and how over the years, this had unfortunately rotted away or had been stolen which is when the problems started.
There was also communal land behind the block of flats which the tenant told us he'd like to be able to use due to limited mobility. However, this site had become overgrown and was being used for fly tipping, dog fouling and attracting anti-social behaviour.
During the same visit, a private homeowner reported to us that there was a lot of rubble left on the CGA-owned land next to her house that, despite several calls to us, had not been removed.
What happened with this information?
Our Environmental Services, Asset Management and Development teams were brought onto the project, to find out what could be done to clear the area and provide the tenant with more privacy.
The outcome of the project
Lots of great things came from this Community Improvement project, including:
The communal land behind the block of flats was cleared by our Environmental Services team, meaning tenants could make use of this space and help keep the area tidy.
A new fence was installed along the length of the footpath to give the tenants privacy and make the footpath boundaries more clear.
The rubble across from the private homeowner's property was cleared by our demolition contractor who was working on Phase 3 of our Savick Regeneration project in the area and was made into extra car parking spaces.
