Lithium-ion batteries
We want to make your home as safe as possible. Lithium-ion batteries can be a cause of fire or explosion.
Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in a range of everyday devices, including vapes, many personal electronics such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric toothbrushes, tools and hoverboards.
The likelihood of them overheating, catching fire and even leading to explosions increases when they are damaged or improperly used, charged or stored.
To avoid the risk of a fire or explosion, please follow these tips when buying, charging, storing, and using lithium-ion battereries:
- Only purchase and use devices, batteries and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognised testing lab and labelled accordingly.
- Use charging equipment that is only compatible with your device. To be safe, only use the charging equipment that's supplied with your device.
- Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it's fully charged.
- Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the rubbish. Take the batteries to a battery recycling point, or contact your local waste department for disposal instructions.
- Stop using your device if the battery shows signs of damage, such as an unusual odour, excessive heat, popping sounds, swelling, or change in colour.
- Only have device repairs performed by a qualified professional.
