Preparing your home for winter
Take a look at the information and support available to help you keep yourself and your home safe and warm
As the colder months approach, there are a few things we would recommend you do to help keep you and your home safe and warm
Top up your boiler pressure
It's important to check that your boiler pressure is correct as you're likely to use your heating more often. The pressure arrow should sit within the green area (around 1.5mb) and will need topping up if it is below this area.
Topping up your boiler pressure is simple and something you can carry out yourself, as long as you feel comfortable enough to do so - just follow these steps:
- Locate the filling loop taps, which will be set to closed
- Open both taps and watch the pressure gauge as the arrow starts to move
- As soon as the arrow reaches the green area (around 1.5mb) close the taps quickly to avoid the pressure dropping back down

Check radiators are heating to the top
Every so often, your radiators will need bleeding to remove any trapped air so the hot water will travel round the pipes properly. Not only will bleeding all your radiators help to heat your home more effectively, but it can also lead to lower energy bills.
We recommend that everyone turns their heating on for 30 minutes to allow all radiators to warm up. Then go around and feel that each one if heating right to the top. If not, then follow the below steps to bleed them.
- Make sure the heating if off and the radiators are cold to touch
- Locate the bleed valve (usually at the top side of the radiator) and place a bucket or towel on the floor underneath it
- Open the bleed valve with a bleed key (or screwdriver) until you hear hissing air coming out
- When the hissing noise stops and you see water starting to come out, close the valve tightly
- Turn the heating back on for another 30 minutes and check that the radiators are now heating right to the top
You might need to check your boiler pressure after bleeding any radiators.
